Medical translations = Language + Knowledge

First and foremost language is about communication. It’s about conveying author’s message to people. Communication is therefore only efficient when the message is comprehensible for the target audience. Translator needs to keep that in mind and adjust language register, e.g. it’s crucial to be clear and straightforward when talking to the patient.
At the other end of the spectrum there are scientific papers. They have their own right and one can’t emphasise enough the importance of strong writing skills. Academic style requires completely different approach, yet, it still needs to be comprehensible.
One thing can assure both transparency and accuracy of any medical text and that is deep understanding of the subject. And as there is no all-knowing people, at the heart of translation lies specialisation.

Becoming specialised translator requires not only mastery of language but also knowledge that goes beyond language comprehension.

Meet your Medical Translator

Malgorzata
Nescioruk-Maniciak

I firmy believe that correct translation requires knowledge beyond language comprehension.

Biotechnologist by education. Linguist by passion. Translator by trade.

When in 2011 I celebrated passing my PAT certificate (Dutch C1) I thought that I got over the hump and translations world is wide open for me. Boy, was I wrong. It turned out to be just the beginning of my road to my medical specialisation, and I’m gratefull for every turn.

Frequently Asked Questions

Because there is no such thing as standard rate.

The quote will be different for medical document, scientific paper or marketing leaflet. I’m not afraid to admit that there will also be difference in case of an individual seeking medical help abroad and in case of pharma corporation conducting clinical trial.

The pace that I feel comfortable with to deliver a top-notch work is 6 standard pages per working day.

I will make every effort to deliver your translation as soon as possible. But to maintain the highest quality I need to work in a pace that allows me to check all necessary resources, review the translation, edit and proofread it.

“Does it mean that if I have 1 or 2 pages it will be done by tomorrow?”  well… no. It all depends – on a time of the year (vacation, bank holidays, Christmas, etc.), on my schedule, on urgency (medical documents always have priority). So please contact me directly and I’m sure we’ll find a reasonable deadline.

Standard page is a standardised volume of the text recognised as a basic unit for quotation.

Usually standard page consists of 250 words or 1800 characters including spaces and this is the unit I use as well.

The easiest way to get a quote is to send me the source text –  before giving you a final quote I would ask you to send it to me anyway.

But there are several information you can include to make the process quicker:

  • who will be the target audience?
  • do you have any reference, legacy texts, glossary that you would like to be included?
  • is the text intended for publishing? If yes, where? Is there a specific style guide required?

Most common file formats I work with:

  • individual clients: .doc(x), .xls(x), .ppt(x), .pdf, .jpg,
  • translation agencies: .doc(x), .xliff

What my Clients and Co-workers say

Zdecydowanie."
